The American Film Institute has trained thousands of film and video professionals in the art of the moving image for nearly four decades.

Now the AFI Screen Education Center is bringing this visual storytelling expertise into K-12 classrooms nationwide.

What Is Screen Education?

Students and teachers today are living and working in a world dominated by screens. Visual language is effortlessly comprehended by even the youngest members of our society.

Screen Education offers an easy-to-follow, 5-Step process designed to help teachers help students use their visual literacy and the tools of filmmaking to master core curriculum subjects, from literature to math and science.

Why AFI Screen Education Works

The AFI Screen Education program is transformational for students and teachers. Students work collaboratively to produce films about what they are learning in class. As a result:

  • Students take charge of their own learning and the collaborative environment distributes learning throughout the group.

  • Students use the power and appeal of filmmaking to demonstrate their knowledge.

  • Students think in their own native language and construct knowledge on their own terms - incorporating the written word and other forms of communications.
